Committed to making a difference—together
Girls Rock Math launched in the summer of 2012. My idea was to create a safe space, and an exciting place for girls to fall in love with math. As a classroom teacher for 10 years, I knew this was something girls needed and I hoped that by providing the kinds of activities I loved as a kid (art, fashion, nature, history, building things) and integrating it with math and a big confidence-boost, girls would find themselves eager to take on math challenges in school later on. I had no clue if my idea would take off or if anyone would even be interested in a math camp for girls. I waited eagerly as each registration trickled in. They came in slowly at first, but before I knew it we had a wait list. I remember all of those first campers so well. In fact, campers from our first summer of camp are now employees of Girls Rock Math! We've had many campers graduate into counselor and staff positions over the years and it's been amazing to see their passion for STEM develop so deeply!
I was very fortunate that in my first summer, I partnered with I-Labs (Institute for Learning and Brain Science) at the University of Washington for our first research study and were able to be part of another one in 2014. Every decision I've made has been linked to the research that's being done around gender and STEM equity. From the songs we sing to the games we play; the heart of each curricular decision begins with looking at research about what makes girls want to explore these topics even more. From those first meetings at I-Labs, to our current planning for this coming summer, all of the decisions that have gone into creating Girls Rock Math are evidence-based and come from a deep-seeded desire to see girls grow into strong, capable leaders. We have had over 5,000 campers come through our program since its inception. I hope each one of them knows how brave and bold they are!
I'm feel so incredibly proud that a small idea has become something that thousands of kids have been able to try for themselves. It shows me that absolutely anything can happen and anything is possible. Sometimes people look at Girls Rock Math and think we must be a huge organization with dozens of people running things. I smile as I write this because I'm sitting on my couch with my feet propped up on the coffee table, which is my favorite way to work. Corporate HQ is my living room most days. Even after all these years, we are still small, still woman owned and operated and still looking for ways to be even better, to grow and reach more campers, and to keep it running strong. If you want to help or have ideas for us, please send me a note. I'm appreciative of feedback and want to hear it. I've continued to think of myself as a teacher, as that was my chosen profession for so many years. I'm interested in partnering with other moms, other people in program development and folks who have a passion for STEM and gender equity. For the future, I hope to see as many girls as possible come and learn, play and find beauty and joy in mathematics. This means building on the solid programs that we know are successful and meet the high standards we've set for ourselves while continuing to develop and grow. I can't wait for your family to be a part of this program. Thanks for joining us!
I started with Girls Rock Math in 2016. I'd come from working summer camps and youth programs at the YMCA after graduating from Western Washington University with my BA in Community and Outdoor Recreation and Spanish. I love seeing girls develop to their full potential and being part of a program that helps all girls see that they can achieve anything. I've had various roles at Girls Rock Math, but by far, the best part has been utilizing my love of art to create graphics and illustrations for the program. I wrote and illustrated the book Hypatia: Explorer of Geometry for use in the curriculum. It has been incredible to see the response from the campers when they learn that women have been doing math for over 2,400 years. I love working on creating everything from stickers to give to the campers to advertising brochures.
When I'm not working, I can be found rock climbing wherever the weather permits across the state or in the gym. I was the first woman and sixth person to complete one of the hardest climbs in Washington State (City Park, Index). I believe in working hard and finding your passion. I know that all of the girls who come to Girls Rock Math have endless potential and like to know that in a small way, Girls Rock Math is part of helping them find it.
I started at Girls Rock Math as a teacher in 2015 fresh from graduating with my BA in Elementary Education. I was eager to start gaining teaching experience and Girls Rock Math was the perfect place for me to learn and grow. Every summer since, in addition to working as an elementary classroom teacher during the school year, I've enjoyed returning to Girls Rock Math during the summer in various roles. I look forward to interacting with the campers every year to see the growth that they make in just five short days with their enthusiasm about STEM and confidence in themselves!
My role now involves developing the training and professional development for our staff and providing coaching and support to teachers who are also using this experience as a jumping off point to their career just as I did when I first started teaching several years ago. I look forward to helping new teachers grow and develop their skills within the inspiring and positive environment of Girls Rock Math camp.
Outside of work, I enjoy the arts and music by attending concerts, plays, and musical theater and singing in a women's chamber choir.
I started as a Site Director in 2022, quickly fell in love with GRM, and have stuck around ever since! It's amazing how over the course of one short week, I get to witness tremendous growth in the campers, the middle school leadership campers, the high school counselors, and the adult staff, too! In 2024 I transitioned to the Assistant Director role and spent more time behind the scenes making sure camp ran smoothly for everyone. I was always impressed when I popped into a classroom for a few minutes and got to hear all about the ideas and projects of our confident, creative campers.
I've been working with youth in after school programs, summer programs, and in public school classrooms for a full decade now! I have experience in teaching dance classes, running programs for immigrant and refugee students, and supporting students with disabilities in the classroom. I started off with a BA in International Studies and recently received my MA in Teaching - Elementary Education.
I love spending time with my friends, reading lots of books, drinking lots of coffee, and pampering my cat.
I started working at GRM in 2021 as a Teaching Fellow. The ongoing coaching, feedback and positive atmosphere that GRM provides continues to be a huge influence on my practice and growth as a beginning elementary educator. Over the years, it has been rewarding to see campers and volunteers return with so much enthusiasm and confidence within themselves personally, as leaders, scientists, engineers and mathematicians!
I am excited to now be taking on the role as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager at GRM with the goal of making camp accessible for all youth and communities.
When I am not working at camp or in my classroom, I enjoy spending time with family, listening to music, rollerblading and exploring outdoors!
I started at Girls Rock Math while finishing my Master of Arts in Teaching from SPU for Special Education and Middle Grade Math. I am currently a middle school special education teacher in Mukilteo, but I love working the summer at GRM! Seeing campers and counselors grow in their leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills through fun STEAM activities feeds my drive for teaching. I am currently a mentor for teaching fellows as well as the inclusionary support specialist for GRM. I love that our camp is proactively collaborating with families and staff to be an inclusive environment for any girls who want to come have a fun week (or 6!) over the summer with us. I am also a lifelong Washingtonian, local girls’ soccer coach, and spend time with my three kids, family, and friends.
I'm Roxanne! My journey has always been about blending my love for working with children, supporting small businesses, and capturing stories through photography. I've been behind a camera since I was 15, starting with a Pentax K1000 in my high school darkroom. That spark has grown into a lifelong passion, guiding my career and creative vision.
I’m originally from Florida, but my sense of adventure led me to Washington state, where I spent three transformative months. That experience opened my eyes to new perspectives and solidified my commitment to creating inclusive, empowering spaces.
One of the most impactful experiences has been working with Girls Rock Math, where I have the privilege of supporting young people—especially girls—in STEM. Seeing firsthand the power of providing space for underrepresented voices in traditionally male-dominated fields has reinforced my dedication to fostering confidence and creativity in others. This mission also influences my photography, where I strive to amplify diverse stories and perspectives.
Now, I split my time between the East and West Coasts, finding inspiration in the vibrant diversity of people and experiences I encounter. Through my work, both behind the camera and in my community, I’m driven by a belief that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and empowered to pursue their passions. Whether it’s capturing a powerful moment, mentoring the next generation of creators and innovators, or supporting small businesses, my goal is to inspire and uplift. I’m excited to continue growing alongside the incredible individuals I meet along the way, and to be a part of movements—like Girls Rock Math—that create lasting, positive change in the world.
I started volunteering with Girls Rock Math when I was in high school. GRM inspired me to pursue a future in education, gain experience in STEM, and make meaningful connections with campers and staff. I spent two summers as a Site Coordinator, before becoming a Teaching Fellow. The following summer I came back again as a teacher, after which I felt prepared, confident and ready to head into my student experience that fall. I am a recent graduate of Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia where I majored in Psychology and Education. I cannot wait to spend the summer at Girls Rock Math and seeing all my wonderful campers before starting my teaching career.
I have been loving full time teaching as well as spending the summers with Girls Rock Math for a decade-plus now! I graduated from an all-women's college, Smith College, which inspired my passion for empowering and uplifting girls as learners and leaders, and later completed my master's degree in K-6 Mathematics Education as I began specializing in teaching math! When not teaching, I enjoy running, rollerblading, cross-stitching, folding origami, and hanging out with my husband and cat!
I have over 20 years of experience in education, earning my BA in Early Childhood Education and MA in Elementary Education. I teach Transitional Kindergarten in Tukwila during the school year and look forward to teaching GRM in the summer. I’m passionate about empowering and motivating girls in math. I’ve loved math as long as I can remember and wish there had been a program like GRM when I was young.
I started with Girls Rock Math as a teacher in 2025. I was very excited to be part of a program that shares my vision of mathematics as a place for everyone. One where all students can learn mathematics not by making them "easy" or stripping down the content, but by engaging learners in rich and interesting tasks that showcase the beauty and complexity of mathematics and inviting all students to engage to whatever levels they desire. Seeing campers grow confident over the course of the week was my favorite part of teaching at GRM! I am happy to now also contribute to Girls Rock Math throughout the year in whatever roles I can, including some curriculum and professional development design.
Outside of GRM, I am a mathematics PhD student at the University of Washington working primarily in combinatorics. Prior to that I worked for about a decade in mathematics education doing research, curriculum writing, and professional development at Youcubed at Stanford University.
When I am not working, you are most likely to find me swimming, reading, baking, or watching movies.
I’m a Mathematics for Secondary Education major who is passionate about making math a welcoming and confidence-building experience for students. I joined Girls Rock Math shy and still developing confidence in myself as an educator, and this experience helped me grow, find my voice, and trust my teaching. GRM gave me meaningful opportunities to support diverse learners, build strong student connections, and strengthen my love for teaching while empowering girls in math.
I started at Girls Rock Math as a camper, later became a CIT and Counselor for five summers. Since 2023, I’ve proudly served as a Site Coordinator. I’m currently studying Public Relations and Dance at Gonzaga University, and I look forward to spending my summers with Girls Rock Math every year!
I have spent the last four summers teaching at Girls Rock Math as both an Intermediate and Primary Teacher, and I absolutely love it! Helping students explore math in hands-on, creative ways and supporting their growth is incredibly rewarding.
For the past four years, I have taught 2nd grade at Cedar Crest Academy in Seattle, where I plan and lead engaging Reading and Math rotations and mentor student teachers. I strive to create a classroom that is both supportive and challenging, where every student can thrive.
Prior to Seattle, I taught a variety of elementary grades in Oregon, including Kindergarten, 3rd–5th grades, and Title One support. I have experience with in-person and distance learning, differentiating instruction, and collaborating with instructional aides to meet the needs of diverse learners.
I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching with an ESOL Endorsement from Lewis and Clark and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Linfield College. I am licensed in Oregon for Elementary Multiple Subjects with an ESOL Endorsement and have experience with curricula including Saxon Math, Wonders, Journeys, HMH Science Dimensions, and Bridges.
Visiting schools in India and Ethiopia has inspired my teaching philosophy and reinforced my love for creating globally minded, engaging classrooms."
