Teaching Fellowships

Your summer starts with an orientation where you will meet other Teaching Fellows, get trained on classroom management techniques, curriculum and instruction and learn about current issues in STEM equity. This leads into the heart of the internship: weeks of classroom instruction where you will lead your very own classroom of approximately 12-20 students following an engaging, hands-on math curriculum. Girls Rock Math camps are arts-based, where fun is central to learning. Not only are the children and youth you’re working with having a blast, but you will have fun teaching our exciting material.

You will work under the guidance of an Instructional Coach, who is an educational professional with years of classroom experience. The Instructional Coach provides regular feedback, observes and trains you in teaching techniques and classroom management.

The typical day is 8:30am to 4:30pm. You will teach, play, sing our fabulous camp songs, and generally have fun with kids all day long.

Studies show as early as second grade, girls are discouraged from subjects in school like math, and begin to associate math as being “for boys” and reading “for girls.”

These ideas limit potential, career options, achievement and motivation.

When girls don’t feel confident and supported in pursuing careers in math, science, engineering and technology, it has serious economic impacts, and like the gender wage gap it has even greater effects on families and communities. If a girl is discouraged from math and science, she undercuts her future leadership and earning potential. When we limit girls’ potential and access to the world of STEM, we limit her ability to contribute her ideas and change the world.

At Girls Rock Math we strive to close that gap and ensure that all girls feel empowered to pursue math or other STEM fields as a career path. Between the ages of 6 and 12, the girls we serve are eager to learn, grow and take on the world. They are bright, capable, adventurous, curious and strong.

Every Teaching Fellow is assigned to either teach the primary or intermediate program. Our primary program is for children entering first through third grade. Our summer program for primary campers has themes like Alice in Numberland, Crafty Math and Prints and Patterns. You'll teach children early math skills such as adding, subtracting, and measurement while painting, creating collages, doing engineering design challenges, and more! Our intermediate program is for campers entering third through sixth grade and includes themes like Infinitely Artistic, Bead-Dazzling Math, and Fashionably Smart. You’ll teach skills such as fractions, multiplication, and division, as well as explore topics such as the Fibonacci Sequence, radial symmetry, binary code, and Fractals.

In addition to teaching, you will work with teens who are part of the teen leadership program, helping facilitate leadership development, social skills, job training and mentoring.

Nope! Teaching Fellows come with varying levels of teaching, camp counseling and tutoring experience. We look for applicants who demonstrate leadership ability and are willing to tackle the steep learning curve with enthusiasm and an open mind. Your greatest resource will be your colleagues, who will collaborate, support, and inspire you throughout the summer.

Teaching Fellows are paid $22 per hour.

Girls Rock Math offers a limited housing allowance pool for out-of-area applicants whose financial circumstances may adversely impact their ability to participate. The maximum award amount per individual is $1500. Priority will be given to early applicants and those who are first-generation college students and those with the highest financial need.

College students or recent graduates interested in becoming a teacher, learning more about the field of education, or who have a desire to promote gender equity in STEM

• Desired college majors: STEM subjects or education, though other majors are also considered
• Minimum GPA: 3.0
• Successful candidates will possess good communication skills, be energetic, enthusiastic, passionate and excited to work with children
• You must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States

• Orientation: June 15, 16, 17, 18
• Training: June 24, 25, 26, 29, 30, July 1, 2, 3
• Fellowship Dates: July 6-Aug 14 (dates will vary based on placement)
